Overhanging Concrete Crown

During inspections we see damaged crowns all the time. What is a crown, and how do you know if yours is damaged?

The crown of the chimney is the concrete top of a masonry chimney. Many chimneys have a non overhanging crown or a “wash” as others call it.

The purpose of the crown is to make sure water doesn’t get into the chimney and protect the top of the chimney.

It shouldn’t be bonded to the brickwork below it, and should have a bond break around the tiles or flues that come through it. And it should over hang the the brickwork and have a drop edge to shed water away from the chimney further.

Take a look at our crowns!
