KCK has a dense, historic, largely brick housing stock, and much of it dates to the early 20th century or before. Strawberry Hill, Argentine, Armourdale, and Rosedale are full of homes built when a masonry chimney was simply how you heated a house. A lot of those chimneys are still standing, still connected, and still doing a job they were built for a hundred years ago.
The common problems:
Deteriorated mortar. A century of Kansas freeze-thaw cycles will wash out mortar joints entirely. When you can rake a joint out with a screwdriver, the chimney is no longer structurally sound and needs repointing before it becomes a rebuild.
Missing or improper liners. Many older KCK chimneys were built unlined, or were later fitted with clay tile that has since cracked. If a modern gas furnace or water heater is venting into an old oversized masonry flue, you get condensation, acidic moisture attacking the brick from inside, and potential draft problems. A correctly sized stainless liner solves it.
Water intrusion. Failed crowns, missing caps, and bad flashing let water into the chimney stack. In an interior chimney that shows up as ceiling stains and musty odors; in an exterior one it shows up as spalling brick faces that pop off in sheets after a hard winter.
