Supplemental heat, not decoration
Berryton is acreage country — larger lots, older farmhouses, and newer rural builds mixed together. Propane is the primary heat for a lot of those homes, and propane prices have made supplemental wood heat genuinely worth the effort. That means a high share of the fireplaces and stoves we service out here are working appliances running most of the winter, not decorative fireboxes used six times a year.
Working appliances need different attention:
Freestanding stoves and inserts. These vent through Class A insulated metal chimney rather than masonry in a lot of newer rural construction. Metal systems have their own failure points — deteriorated storm collars, failed high-temp sealant at the roof penetration, loose sections, and rusted-through caps. We service metal chimney systems as well as masonry.
Creosote volume. A stove that runs continuously through January puts down far more creosote than an open fireplace does. Closed appliances burn more efficiently but they also run flue temperatures lower, which is exactly the condition that condenses creosote onto the flue wall. Heavy burners should be sweeping more than once a year.
Install and upgrade work. If you’re putting in a new stove or insert, the venting has to be sized and configured correctly for the appliance. An undersized or oversized flue causes draft problems that no amount of good firewood will fix. We handle installs and can tell you what your existing chimney will and won’t support.
