Emporia, Kansas
Emporia is the furthest point on our regular service map, and we handle it by batching Lyon County work into scheduled trips rather than making one-off runs. Call us, tell us your availability, and we’ll get you into the next block. It’s how we keep the pricing reasonable at that distance.
Victorian housing and the multi-flue problem
Emporia was founded in 1857 and grew fast through the late 1800s. The neighborhoods around Commercial Street and out toward the Emporia State campus still hold a lot of that era’s housing — substantial two-story brick and frame homes, many with elaborate original chimney stacks.
Those stacks are frequently multi-flue: a single masonry chimney containing two, three, or occasionally four separate flues serving different appliances. Originally that meant a parlor fireplace, a kitchen range, and a coal or wood furnace in the basement. Over a century of remodeling, those flues have been variously abandoned, reused, tied into modern gas appliances, or forgotten entirely.
This causes specific, recurring problems that we look for on every Emporia inspection:
Shared or crossed flues. Two appliances venting into one flue is a code violation and a carbon monoxide risk. It happens more often than you’d think when a furnace gets replaced by someone who doesn’t check what’s already in the stack.
Abandoned flues collecting water. A flue capped at the bottom but open at the top is a rain funnel inside your chimney. It saturates the surrounding masonry and freezes, and it’s a leading cause of interior chimney deterioration in old houses.
Oversized flues on modern appliances. A high-efficiency gas furnace venting into a flue sized for a coal boiler will never establish proper draft. Flue gases cool, condense, and the acidic moisture eats the mortar from the inside. A correctly sized stainless liner is the fix.
Deteriorated masonry. Standard for the age — washed-out mortar joints, spalled brick, and cracked crowns. Note that on historic soft brick, repointing needs a lime-based mortar rather than a hard modern Portland mix, or the mortar will outlast the brick and the brick will fail at the joint.
